Catch Video (by Watanabe)

In Catch Video, Hakudo Kobayashi multiplies recorded images and sounds by re-filming projected scenes. For example, Kobayashi records painter and guitarist Masayasu Watanabe performing the Russian folk song “Two Guitars,” then films him again doing exactly the same thing next to a monitor displaying the performance captured before, then the same procedure again and once more, thereby not only doubling but quadrupling the re-presentation. Kobayashi and a few other members of the artist group “Video Hiroba” (founded in Ginza in the early 1970s) jointly purchased a black-and-white consumer video camera and began exploring the technical limits of the medium, always assisting with each other’s projects, which ranged from formalistic videos like Hakudo Kobayashi’s work to social documentaries.
